Five Good Habits YOU Should Develop!

Five Good Habits to develop …

1.  Look after yourself … EVERYTHING is better when you are healthy.   Read my Healthy Executive series of blogs for some ideas!  (PS You don’t need to be an executive to get some good ideas there!)

2.  Start using GOALS to set yourself up for success.  I have written many blog entries about Goals …  this is just one, but maybe it will get you thinking about whether this is a good habit you can invest in!

3.  To Do lists are a must have item … if you are at all busy then I don’t know how you could survive without To Do lists!!!

4.  I see people in meetings every day and they never write anything down.  Taking notes is a basic skill that you should develop … definitely a good habit to cultivate!

5.  My fifth good habit is what prompted the idea for this blog … I wrote just yesterday about the power of checklists.  Add that good habit and watch the positive impact!  Remember, checklists can work for anyone, not just sales people!

A Great Example of Giving to Charity … Trudeau v Brazeau

On Saturday night the fifth annual Fight for the Cure took place at the Hampton Inn in Ottawa and the headliners were Canadian Liberal MP Justin Trudeau and Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau.  There has been much written about the event both in the lead up and in its aftermath, and really that is what it was all about … visibility for the charity event that raises money to fight cancer!

Some of the pundits have been critical, suggesting it was all a “show” for publicity by the two politicians.  There were also critics who believe that boxing is barbaric and not suitable for 21st century consumption.  There were the people who thought Trudeau would get “smoked” and many of these writers ignored the primary reason for the event … to fight cancer.

I have a pretty good perspective on this because I took part in the event last year (that is me in the picture).  The previous October I started my five month journey from reticent participant with no boxing experience (and blogged about that) to the big night when I climbed into that ring in front of a packed house.  To get to that point all of the participants have gone through months of gruelling workouts, many many sparring sessions and have likely spilled a little blood along the way.  I had several bloodied noses and a black eye at various points during the training … as I’m sure did Trudeau and Brazeau.  I did not lose sight of why I was doing it, and nor did they … it was about fighting cancer!

I can tell you that on Saturday night I found some new role models to add to my growing list … and it is no small irony that the person I highlighted in my blog about role models was a politician who died of cancer last year (Jack Layton).  I add Trudeau and Brazeau to my list because I know what it took for them to step up, and they had the added pressure of being public figures.  It is tough to perform in front of so many and with the armchair critics taking their lumps.  They will however go back to work this week and remember they did it to fight cancer!

On Saturday night the two politicians had a battle ( the youtube video is embedded in this Sun article), and both can stand proud that their personal sacrifices resulted in a very classy event that raised a lot of money to fight cancer.  Justin Trudeau won the bout but both fighters won in the battle to fight cancer and perhaps even restore a little honor to a profession that does not always present itself so well.  I particularly enjoyed this Ottawa Citizen article about Truly Honourable Members!

Last year I gave blood in addition to my usual contributions of money and time, this year Trudeau and Brazeau joined the ranks of Fight for the Cure alumni who have done the same.  So two things …

1. Can you step up and give back to a great cause?  There are lots of great causes that need your help and you don’t even have to give blood!  What is most important is that you Get in the Game and Give Back!  If you want to support Justin and Patrick (and four other white collar guys who went at it on Saturday night) then this link will take you to the donation page.

2.  If you want to pass comment about the participants, question their integrity in this event or even their performance I suggest you try making the same kind of commitment.  I can tell you first hand that it is tough, it hurts and it takes guts!

A BIG congratulations to Matt Whitteker, Rob Imbeault and all involved in organising FFTC 2012 on Saturday!

Some What Ifs … that Could Change Our World!

Last year I wrote a blog entry called 10 rules on How to Enjoy Your Life.

In that same way of thinking, ask your self these “What if …” questions and see if they apply.

1.  What if … you went to work with the same enthusiasm that you have when leaving work?

2.  What if … you spent your time focused on the possibilities ahead of you, rather than the regrets behind you?

3.  What if … you focused on GIVING and let the RECEIVING just happen?

4.  What if … you looked for the GOOD in people, rather than noticing the things that “bother” you?

5.  What if … you spent as much time working on your challenges, as you do worrying about them?

6.  What if … you looked for ways to fix and improve rather than excuses?

7.  What if … you spent an hour a day on self improvement and an hour less a day doing less fruitful activities?

8.  What if … you smiled instead of frowned?

9.  What if … you took charge of your health instead of making excuses?

10.  What if … everyone did these things?

Please KNOW that there is NOTHING stopping you from doing ALL of this … except YOU

If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right … Henry Ford

Today IS the First Day of the Rest of Your Life

Whenever you read that statement, it is true!  Some of you will take that as an opportunity to procrastinate and others will take it as an opportunity to act.

Life does not always work out the way we had expected … in fact it rarely does.  We make plans and “things happen” along the way … that’s just life!

“Have you got a problem? Do what you can where you are with what you’ve got.” ___ Theodore Roosevelt

There are a number of aspects to our lives, and you need a plan for ALL of them.  You will not be truly content if any one of these is causing you concern … so work on them all!

1.  Your work life.

2.  Your home life/relationships.

3.  Your health.  Check out my Healthy Executive blog entries.

4.  Your education.

The best way to get where you want to go, is to start!  Set yourself goals and exceed them.  Every time you meet a goal you increase your confidence AND the likelihood that you will reach your end goal (at which point you will need new goals)!

You need to PLAN, and Revisit that Plan often.

You will need GOALS … they give you something to shoot for, and how else will you know where you are going and whether you have actually arrived if you don’t have goals?

You need to believe in yourself … and good things WILL happen.

Take some time to make YOUR goals a reality.  The past is done … but the future is full of promise!   LIVE your life!!!

Look After Yourself … You Only get One Go at This!

I read an article in the globe and mail today (courtesy of one of my twitter friends) about Fitness and Aging.  it references some interesting new research that suggests our body breaks down (read slows down, loses strength and fitness etc) more because we stop working out than from age.

Here are a few thoughts for you …

1.  You will cope with the stress and strain of your job better if you are in decent physical shape.

2.  If you put on just 2 lb of fat every year starting at age 25 (let’s not even mention the Freshman 5/10/20) … then you are going to be carrying a lot of extra weight by the time you are my age … more than 60lbs (more than 4 stone for you Brits)!!!!

3.  Everybody can find 30 minutes, 4 times a week to do some exercise … watch a little less TV, park your car 15 minutes from work and walk back and forth 5 times a week; get out both weekend days and then you only need two 30 minute slots during the week; ride a stationary bike while watching TV; there are lots of ways to do it.

4.  Add some weights into your routine … you don’t need to build huge muscles (it is not likely to happen unless you put some serious amount of work into it), but weight training will build some muscle quite quickly, which will increase your metabolism and mean you burn more fat all the time.

5.  Think before you eat or drink … do you need this; is there a better alternative; do you need ALL of it?  Small changes can make a big difference.

Being fit does not necessarily mean you will live longer, but it will make your time here more enjoyable.   This Summer I played soccer on the same team as my kids (in their twenties) … how cool is that?

I wrote a series of blog entries called The Healthy Executive … you don’t need to be an executive, take a read.

We only get one shot at life, it would be a shame not to live it as fully as possible.

The Generosity of People

I have written several times about the need to support the less fortunate and the other good causes within our society.  I reviewed a book by  John Izzo called, The Five Secrets You Must discover Before You Die … the 5th secret being to Give More Than You Take!  I wrote a piece in November last year asking people to dig deep because it has Been a Tough Year Charities.

It sometimes feels like I am always asking for money … but I am also acutely aware that I need to do my bit or our charitable organizations would be in a mess.

So … I am the guy who is always asking people for money, and I decide to take part in the Becel Ride for Heart.  A 50 km bike ride, for which I am sorely (pun intended) prepared.  My intention was to write a $100 cheque myself, perhaps send out an email to “the usual suspects’ and see if a few more dollars came in.

It has been amazing, and the generosity of people has blown me away!!  If you visit my personal pledge page today you will see that my friends have donated more than $3,250 to this cause already!  All the result of one email asking for a few dollars!!!

It is times like this that I am reminded of the good in people, of how lucky I am to know such people and that the vast majority of people are basically good.  It is easy sometimes to be a little cynical and forget that … but it is a lesson worth remembering, and times like this teach it.

THANKS!!!!

PS.  If you want to donate a few dollars yourself, here is my Donation Page :-)

We ALL Have The Power To Be a Positive Force!!!

John drags himself to work each day … he “isn’t challenged”, “doesn’t like his boss”, spends as much of each day checking out the news, sports updates, plans for a next vacation … anything but work.  He has a sign in his cubicle that says, “Hard work never hurt anyone … but why take a chance!”

Mary puts on a brave face to her bosses, but complains to her friends and family about the co-workers, her job, her commute, her uncomfortable chair and the fact that John makes more money than her … even though he doesn’t have seniority.

Bill gets in to work 15 minutes earlier than he needs to, and leaves a little later than he needs to as well.  He knows if he need some time off his boss will cut him some slack, trusting he’ll make it up.  His job can be a little boring sometimes, but he challenges himself to learn something new each week and tries to get involved in other projects when it makes sense.  He is on the social committee and has a secret plan to make everyone in his area smile at least once every day!

Jen is a serious athlete, she puts in extra hours in her job so that her boss will be flexible in accommodating her training schedule.  Her life is the triathlon, and the serious training that goes with it.  She appreciates that it her job that allows her to pursue her passion and so she tries to demonstrate her appreciation through the quality of her work and her attitude.

We all meet John, Mary, Bill and Jen (and people just like them) in the course of our work life.

Personally I try to avoid John and Mary … they drag me down.  They are a negative influence on everyone in their lives, and they are never really happyJen and Bill on the other hand bring a positive spin to life and energise those around them … consequently they are content in their lives.  I want to hang out with Jen and Bill!

Do you find that strange?  The people avoiding work, doing the bare minimum to get by are also the unhappy ones … look around, maybe even look in the mirror, and you will see it!

I could probably write a book about this stuff … but in a very few words:

  • YOU decide whether you are a positive person or a negative person.;
  • It is not the people around you;
  • It is not your job;
  • It is not your set of circumstances;
  • It is ALL YOU!!!
  • It is an incredibly POWERFUL thing … yet so many people CHOOSE to be miserable.

Go figure!

Life Balance … as Opposed to Work/Life Balance!

What is life balance to you?

I read a lot these days about work/life balance.
My wife is invariably asked about balancing work and family commitments whenever she speaks to women’s groups.
Here is what it means for me …

I talk about “Life Balance” … not about Life/Work balance.  Its all part of one life … and everything in my life is intertwined:

1.  Like most people I very often make friends through work … so if I’m with “work friends” am I working?
2.  I met my wife at work.
3.  My wife is  my business partner.
4.  Many times I attend events in my capacity as CEO of the company, but they are social in nature.
5.  I get a lot of pleasure from achievements in my life … whether they are “work related” or more personal in nature, but very often they are intertwined.  Recently I boxed in a charity match, four months of training, some bloodied noses and black eyes, a high level of fitness and a strong sense of achievement … but I was doing it as CEO of Eagle.  Was that work?
6.  I value life-long learning as keeping my brain active, keeping me engaged and alive .. this can be work related, or other activities but I gain pleasure from it.
7.  I place a high value on my family, I don’t miss key events, if I missed one event in my kid’s lives I don’t remember it, I coached them both in soccer, attended everything they were involved with, see them regularly and enjoy their company often … but my work has never suffered.
8.  I have enjoyed some success at work, have been a business owner and CEO for almost 15 years, work long hours but I get great satisfaction from my success and financially my family is able to do things we might not have been able to do had I not made the sort of commitment needed for that success.

I mentioned that Janis always gets asked about work/life balance when talking to women’s groups …  and it drives her nuts.  How often do I get asked that question in my peer groups?  Actually .. never!   We run companies and we have busy lives … like I said yesterday, busy people find a way to fit their high priority items in!

So … I have one life with many parts to it, my job, my family, my health, my fitness, my hobbies, my learning etc.   My happiness, contentment and feeling of achievement comes from all aspects of my life.  So I strive for a balanced LIFE … not Work/Life balance.

Does that make sense?

March is Nutrition Month

Here I am again talking about health and fitness again!  I firmly believe that we perform better in all aspects of our life, AND cope better with stress when we are healthy and fit.  So whatever your status in life, getting in a little better shape will benefit you and hence the reason for these blog entries.  A couple of weeks ago I blogged about Nutrition Myths, and today I wanted to share the result of a recently published list of 10 great health foods from the Mayo Clinic.   These 10 health foods were chosen because they meet at least three of the following criteria:

  • Are a good or excellent source of fiber, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients
  • Are high in phytonutrients and antioxidant compounds, such as vitamins A and E and beta carotene
  • May help reduce the risk of heart disease and other health conditions
  • Are low in calorie density, meaning you get a larger portion size with a fewer number of calories
  • Are readily available

The foods on this list are as follows:

Apples: Apples are an excellent source of pectin, a soluble fiber that can lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels. Fresh apples are also good sources of the vitamin C – an antioxidant that protects your body’s cells from damage. Vitamin C also helps form the connective tissue collagen, keeps your capillaries and blood vessels healthy, and aids in the absorption of iron and folate.

Almonds: Almonds are packed with nutrients – fiber, riboflavin, magnesium, iron and calcium. In fact, almonds have more calcium than any other nut, and one serving provides half of your body’s Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamin E.

Blueberries: Blueberries are a rich source of plant compounds (phytonutrients). As with cranberries, phytonutrients in blueberries may help prevent urinary tract infections. Blueberries may also improve short-term memory and promote healthy aging.

Broccoli: Besides being a good source of calcium, potassium, folate and fiber, broccoli contains phytonutrients – a group of compounds that may help prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Broccoli is also a good source of vitamins A and C – antioxidants that protect your body’s cells from damage.

Red beans: Red beans – including small red beans and dark red kidney beans – are good sources of iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper and thiamin. They’re also an excellent low-fat, low-calorie source of protein and dietary fiber. Red beans also contain phytonutrients that may help prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Salmon: Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids – a type of fat that makes your blood less likely to form clots that may cause heart attacks. Omega-3s may also protect against irregular heartbeats that may cause sudden cardiac death, decrease triglyceride levels, decrease the growth of artery-clogging plaques, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke.

Spinach: Spinach is high in vitamins A and C and folate. It’s also a good source of riboflavin, vitamin B-6, calcium, iron and magnesium. The plant compounds in spinach may boost your immune system and may help keep your hair and skin healthy.

Sweet potatoes: The deep orange-yellow color of sweet potatoes tells you that they’re high in the antioxidant beta carotene. Food sources of beta carotene, which are converted to vitamin A in your body, may help slow the aging process and reduce the risk of some cancers. Sweet potatoes are also good sources of fiber, vitamins B-6, C and E, folate and potassium.

Vegetable juice: Vegetable juice has most of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients found in the original vegetables and is an easy way to include vegetables in your diet. Tomato juice and vegetable juices, which include tomatoes, are good sources of lycopene, an antioxidant which may reduce the risk of heart attack, prostate cancer and possibly other types of cancer. Some vegetable and tomato juices are very high in sodium, so be sure to select the low-sodium varieties.

Wheat germ: At the center of a grain of wheat is the wheat germ – the part of the seed that’s responsible for the development and growth of the new plant sprout. Though only a small part of the wheat seed, the germ is a highly concentrated source of nutrients, including niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin E, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc. The germ also contains protein, fiber and some fat.

SO WHAT you may ask … the magic comes in trying to substitute some of these items into your diet instead of some of the  “other” stuff you might currently eat.

Are you going to switch out your French fries for broccoli … probably not!  BUT you can start to make some changes.

  1.  Eat a small handful of almonds mid morning and mid afternoon.  They will make feel less hungry when it comes time to have your next meal, reducing your temptation to overeat … plus they are good for you.
  2. If you are prone to dessert could you have some low fat whipped cream and blueberries instead of ice cream?
  3. Could you have salmon once a week instead of red meat?
  4. Could you snack on an apple in the evening instead of the bad stuff?

There are lots of small ways to improve your nutritional intake, without changing your life wholesale.  In fact the worst thing you can do is to try and change everything … it doesn’t work, you need to slowly introduce good habits and perhaps reduce your intake very gradually … just slightly smaller portions.  Then you have a chance of sticking to it!

It is interesting that the Mens Health Abs Diet (and Women’s Health Abs Diet) promotes a set of “good” foods very similar to those shown here.  You can read about their Power Foods here.

Give it a try … change your whole life by feeling better!
