International Opportunities

Is working outside of Canada an option?

Absolutely! And Eagle would be pleased to pave the way!

Today’s global economy presents the perfect opportunity to stake your place in it. Contractors sometimes choose to work south of the border because U.S.-based companies are often technological leaders in their field. Others cite better rates and more opportunities. Still others look to opportunities outside of Canada because they welcome the chance to travel the world or prefer a warmer climate. And it never hurts to have international assignments on the resume!

Don’t you need some sort of special status to work in the U.S.?

Under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement, any Canadian citizen may work in the United States if they meet certain criteria. In our area of expertise, for example, you must be a qualified professional with a relevant degree or diploma and have three years experience.

At Eagle, we can help you through the process by preparing all the necessary paperwork for the application.

Is it necessary to relocate?

Like all terms of an agreement, travel and living expenses would be discussed in advance with the prospective employer. While many do relocate, there are others who make arrangements to remain in Canada and commute to the workplace.

A lot of American companies are recruiting directly. Why not just go work for them?

That may be an option, but it can also put your Canadian citizenship at risk. However, a lot of contractors choose to protect their citizenship even though they work for a company in the United States. To do that, you must be very knowledgeable about Canadian law, something that is not a priority for many foreign firms.

Is there a downside to working outside of Canada?

There are a lot of things to consider before making the decision to work outside of Canada. Among them are taxes, incorporation, emigration, insurance and legal issues – all items that should be dealt with in advance of the move. Of course, good legal and financial advice is a must. So is working through a Canadian company.

At Eagle, we understand the issues facing Canadians working outside of the country. We can help you avoid the potential pitfalls on everything from health care coverage to income tax. And, because we are a well-established, financially stable company ourselves, we can make sure you are paid regularly – and on time.
