Eagle’s President, Janis Grantham,to Judge International Business Plan Competition

Ottawa, ON, January 15, 2009 – Janis Grantham, Chief Operating Officer at Eagle, has been invited to judge at the Queen’s Entrepreneurs’ Competition (QEC), Canada’s largest international undergraduate business plan competition. In its 21st year, the QEC will bring together some of the brightest young entrepreneurs in the world from January 22-24, 2009 at Queen’s University. Ms. Grantham will play a critical role in deciding which of the 16 finalist teams will take home $25,000 in cash prizes, a shot* with the Dragons from CBC’s Dragon’s Den, and a stay at the five-star Fox Harb’r resort.

In between pitches, competitors will hear from speakers Kathleen E. Sendall (Vice-President of North American Natural Gas, Petro Canada), Brett Wilson (Dragon on CBC’s The Dragon’s Den) and Jeff Dennis (PROFIT Magazine Columnist and Author of “Lessons from the Edge”). QEC 2009 will continue to cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit by connecting competitors with established business professionals who can impart wisdom on the intricacies of a business start-up.

Teams from around the world submitted their written business plans in early November for the preliminary judging round. QEC attracts submissions from as far as Philippines, Portugal, India and Britain. From this pool, judges selected the top 16 teams to compete in the final weekend. On the Friday of the final weekend, teams will be divided into two pools of eight, and must present their ideas to a panel of established entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and business professionals. The QEC is excited to have Janis Grantham join the competition. The panels will select three teams from each pool to advance to Saturday’s open-house style final round of competition, in which teams will compete for the top three cash prizes of $15,000, $6,000 and $2,000. In addition, two teams from the top 16 will also go home with innovation prizes valued at $1000.

“I am very excited to be involved in this competition,” stated Ms. Grantham. “I applaud Queen’s for hosting this event and encouraging entrepreneurship among this group of bright, engaged young people. Giving people the opportunity to explore new business ideas, and better still, bring those ideas to fruition this early in their careers bodes extremely well for the future of entrepreneurship in Canada.”

*The top-ranked team of Canadian residence from the 2009 Queen’s Entrepreneurs’ Competition will be guaranteed a chance to pitch their plan to the dragons from CBC’s Dragon’s Den (Subject to the renewal of CBC’s Dragon’s Den for 2009).
