Industry News     September 2011

In addition to Hurricane Irene hitting the US coast, August 2011 saw a mini-market crash and the world continues to lack confidence in the economy.  A look at the various indicators across Canada, the US and the EU would suggest that August was perhaps a tough month on a seemingly never ending journey to recovery.  The biggest industry news this month could have been the $12.5 Billion purchase of Motorola Mobility by Google but arguably the announcement that Steve Jobs is stepping down from Apple seemed to get more coverage.

Other than the Google/Motorola deal, it wasn’t a busy acquisitions month. IBM paid $387 Million to add Algorithmics to its analytics portfolio and also bought another analytics company this month, i2 out of the UK.  Skype, which is in the process of being merged into Microsoft, bought GroupMe, Bitly bought Twitterfeed, Citrix bought Ringcube and Cisco is buying a piece of Comptel.

In other news this month was a disturbing story about a multi-year hacking project known as Operation Shady Rat which has been gathering sensitive, even top secret information since 2006.  A group of IT workers launched a class action suit in the US because their employer replaced them with cheaper workers under the H1B program - should be an interesting one to watch.  Overall it was a fairly quiet month for business, with lots of decision makers taking vacation and the unsettled economy making buyers a little nervous.  A little stability and good news is needed now to ensure September gets back on track, and our investments get a chance to recover from this latest “crash”.

  IT Job Market Update

The Summer months generally result in a slowdown in the job market.  Decision makers and hiring managers take time off, getting approvals is a little tougher and often everything just takes longer.  That is reflected in the unemployment numbers, with July and August being relatively flat after three months of growth.  Canadas unemployment rate in August was up very marginally 7.3% from 7.2% in July.  Overall Canada has added 223,000 jobs in the last twelve months.

At time of writing, the Canadian Dollar remains strong against the US dollar, and is still above par at close to $1.01 US although the markets continue to be very volatile.  While Canadas economy continues to perform better than most, it is not immune to events around the world.  Europe in particular continues to struggle with sovereign debt issues, particularly with the PIIGS.  The US unveiled another stimulus package to try and keep interest rates low, and stimulate some spending.  The results can be seen in the stock markets where the TSX is down about 100 points from last month, currently at 12,131.  The oil patch continues to be somewhat strong, but certainly lower than the highs of just a few months ago… current price per barrel sits at about $86.90, up almost $3 from last month.

Here at Eagle, the August volumes were very similar to July volumes, but we have seen increases beginning late August and early September.  Judging from that, we would expect September to reflect a moderate uptick in demand for labour, continuing to improve as we hit October… barring the effect of any world catastrophes.
