Eagle-Sponsored Educational Event Kicks Off Saturday
Ottawa, ON, April 15, 2021 – After a brief hiatus, the MASC Young Authors & Illustrators Festival (MYAIF), the Ottawa region’s favourite educational event that inspires hundreds of children, will return on Saturday, April 17th, but this time in a virtual format. Through an online platform, the event will continue to provide students from grades 6 to 8 with the opportunity to meet and learn from best-selling, award-winning, critically-acclaimed authors and illustrators during focused, hands-on Master Classes.
The MASC Young Authors and Illustrators Festival is produced by the Ottawa-based arts organization MASC and sponsored by Eagle Professional Resources (Eagle), a Canada-wide professional staffing agency with headquarters based in Ottawa. This will be the 29th year where students throughout the capital region will prosper from the festival and the slate of professionals scheduled to share their knowledge is as great as ever.
The event will be hosted by Just Jamaal the Poet who will lead group sessions on the mainstage, including collaborative poem creation. In addition, participants will break out into intimate Master Classes with favourites from festivals past, including authors Kevin Sands, Monique Polak, Jessica Scott Kerrin and Melanie Florence; and illustrators Katherine Battersby and Kean Soo.
During the Master Classes, the presenters will talk about the creative inspirations behind their books, provide demonstrations or readings from their work and offer tips and tricks of the trade. Students will engage in hands-on creative exercises and will leave with the start of their very own literary creations.
“Organizers, volunteers and participants alike were all devastated when the 2020 MYAIF had to be cancelled last spring. It was scheduled to take place just weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic hit,” said Faith Seltzer, Artistic Director for the festival. “Fortunately, through persistent work, creativity and technology, we’re excited to be back this year with a virtual festival.”
This is the 20th year that Eagle has been a presenting sponsor of this educational event. Over the years, members of the staffing company's leadership team and staff have sat on the committee and have volunteered at the event to help it run smoothly.
Lisa Murray, Director of Marketing at Eagle and a long-time member of the MYAIF planning committee, is also encouraged that the show will go on. “I’ve had the good fortune of watching hundreds of kids leave the festival each year with huge smiles, new friends and incredible memories,” said Murray. “I know the positive impact it has on kids, not just from seeing it as a volunteer, but as a mother. My children have both attended and volunteered in the past and two of them are thrilled to be assisting in the Master Classes this year.”
MASC brings the arts and culture alive for over 120,000 children, youth, teachers, and seniors each year.
