Get the Most Out of Life

A friend if mine sent me a quote from Mark Twain that he thought might appeal to some who read this blog.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the one's you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

In some ways the sentiment is reminiscent of one of my favorite quotes from James Dean. " Dream like you will live forever. Live like you will die today." On the other hand I think Twain's quote is a little more structured ... it makes me want to think about the things I should do.

Over the last few years I have been creating a couple of lists. A list of places I would like to visit before I die ... and a list of some things I would like to do before I die. It is an interesting thing to do because it brings some focus to ideas that might otherwise just be dreams that never reach reality.

The act of writing down these "goals" causes me to really think about them, to actually commit that these are important to me. Having made that commitment it is now up to me to make them a reality.

These kind of goals can be "big audacious goals" or they can be just small things that you want to achieve. Try it! Think about a few things that you would like to achieve and just make them happen. It might be learn to scuba dive, or take some dance lessons ... it could be a visit somewhere you have never been before or a commitment to read a book a month. Anything that works for you.

The next step is to create a plan to make it happen, and then execute on that plan.

The pleasure you get from reaching goals is a great feeling. The trick then is to keep setting goals and achieving them. The more accomplished you become, the bigger the goals might be ... and your life is filled with achievements. It is a great way to live, rather than letting "fate" determine your destination!
