Henry Ford is credited with saying, "Whether you think you can, or think you can't ... you're right."
We see this every day in business, when sales people don't believe they can "make their numbers", when project managers don't believe they can deliver on budget, when production managers don't believe they can achieve their goals .. inevitably they prove themselves right!
We also see the converse, when teams set stretch goals but believe they can do it; when companies believe they can make breakthroughs; when governments believe they can reach the moon ... the result is success!
Having said all of that, the mere act of believing is not enough in itself. It is ACTION that will make things happen. Until you actually start to implement your plan, act on your ideas and physically put the pieces into place you are not going anywhere.
It is a trap that many people fall into ... they want to talk, think, plan, strategise, contemplate, brainstorm ... but until ACTION happens you have nothing.
Great companies have good plans and implement them well.
Good salespeople have a plan to meet their targets and execute on it.
Good project managers have a solid plan to meet their goals and they ensure each task is completed well in order to complete their project on time and under budget.
So my message here is that planning, stategising, thinking, believing are all critical parts of your success ... but it is ACTION that will get you there.
A great plan with lousy implementation will fail.
A poor plan with great implementation will achieve some success.
"You are what you do, not what you say you will do." Carl Gustav Jung
It may seem obvious that we need to act, but so many people get hung up before they get to action. Do NOT over think, over strategise or over research. My advice is definitely to think, plan and strategise but then move quickly to make things happen.
As Nike says ... at some point Just Do It!
