Have you ever noticed that life is full of compromise?
It permeates our whole lives, starts when we are very young ... and never ends!
As kids we learned to negotiate ... if I eat my greens can I stay up and watch Batman? Yuck ... who wants to eat those greens, but hey I get to watch Batman!
As we grow older we trade off chores for privileges, we trade off studying for some weekend freedoms, we trade off grades for hockey equipment.
In adulthood it is no difference ... but sometimes we just need to take time to understand that the same stuff is happening. If we want to move out of our parents home then we may need to cut back on a lot of discretionary spending. If we want to buy that first house we may need to wait for the new car.
We see it in relationships ... we trade time with our friends to build a strong relationship with our partner, time with our partner, and friends, to spend time with our kids.
In our work lives we see compromise all the time ... we move to a new job and we are the new kid on the block, with higher expectations. We get a promotion and we no longer are the expert ... we are the learner. We move up the ladder and often we are compromising with our home life. We own our own business and we find ourselves working harder than ever!
Life is always about compromise. There is a price to everything that we do and if we do not go into those situations with our eyes open then we can get a nasty surprise. Like everyone, I have made wrong choices at times ... and paid the price. Of course if you don't make choices then you won't make mistakes ... but who wants to live a life that way!
There are no silver bullets in life, only compromise ... and only you know which compromises work for you! Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but don't make more than you have to! Go into new situations with your eyes wide open, understand as much as possible what you are getting into ... then, if it is right, grab the opportunity and make it happen. If this isn't the right opportunity, or the right time then don't worry ... if your eyes are open you will see it when it arrives.
All come with a price ... the question is are you willing to pay and is the timing right?

I write these articles with the intent of sharing MY experience and knowledge gained during MY life journey. From the 16 year old joining the Royal Navy, through many incarnations, to the grey haired guy who built a business. If you find a nugget here, then I am happy. If the message offends you then I apologise, that was never my intent. I know and recognize there are many people and groups who have a far bigger challenge than I have had and I only wish you well.
