A New Year - What Will You Make of It?

What does the New Year mean to you?

Have you thought about what you would like to do this year?

If it was the last day of the new year and you were looking back on the year what would you like to have achieved?

What would you like to be able to say? (That you could have influenced).

We can start new goals, or new projects any time … but somehow a new year feels a little bit like a new beginning, which I suppose is why so many people make new year resolutions.

I used to think that goals were just too much trouble … I didn’t know where to begin, and I just couldn’t make them work for me.

The reality is that goals can be (a) very powerful, (b) they don’t need to be complex AND (c) it is easy to get started.

Try this …

STEP 1.Find yourself some alone time … give yourself an hour with a pen and a piece of paper.

STEP 2.On the first sheet of paper put the title … PERSONAL GOALS.

STEP 3.Think of some things you would really like to do …
(a) lose some weight.
(b) get fitter
(c) take a trip
(d) spend more time with a friend
(e) learn to dance salsa
(f) etc etc as many as you can think of in 10 minutes or less.

STEP 4.Do the same on another sheet of paper titled … PROFESSIONAL GOALS.
(a) get a certification
(b) learn better writing skills
(c) improve public speaking skills
(d) get a new job
(e) get a promotion (or position for a promotion)
(f) etc etc as many as you ca think of in 10 minutes or less.

STEP 5.Now pick a couple of the items that you REALLY want to do, AND you BELIEVE are possible.

STEP 6.Once you identify your goals then you develop a plan to make them a reality … “Don’t make resolutions without an action plan.  The secret to success is right in your hands.” J. Allen Shaw

Here are some examples:

#1. If the goal is “learn to dance salsa”, the plan might be:

  • research dance schools and options (including personal instruction)

  • identify friends who might like to do it with you.

  • identify when you could do it … every second Thursday at 7pm.

  • book it for you, a couple of friends and for at least 5 lessons.

#2. If the goal is “improve your speaking skills” …

  • look into training options (include Toastmasters & Dale Carnegie)

  • identify if any training is available through work (get


    from HR, management etc)

  • see if you have any friends/colleagues who might do it with you (always better motivation if you are not alone)

  • identify what best suits your schedule and budget

  • book a course/join a club

Setting a goal and having a plan to reach that goal is VERY powerful.  Try it!

Start small and get some success.

Get more adventurous as you gain confidence!
