Every now and then and probably not nearly often enough, I take a time to focus on how lucky we are to be living in Canada!
It is natural for us to want things to be perfect. We complain about the little things that niggle us … the weather, the commute to work, the economy, our politicians etc.
Yet a quick scan of the news today would tell us that we live in one of the best places on Earth … and really we should be thankful for all that we HAVE as opposed to complain about the things we don’t.
Today people around the world are in a life and death struggle to change their circumstances … we have seen popular uprisings in Egypt, Libya and Bahrain that evoked different levels of brutality from those different governments. Those people felt the need to “stand up” for their rights. We can protest for change here in Canada and we will not be facing soldiers in our streets, let alone shooting civilians with machine guns!
An earthquake hit Christchurch in New Zealand, and the death toll is currently 65 but expected to rise. We here in Canada didn’t have any cities demolished by mother nature recently.
Four people sailing a yacht off Somalia were killed by pirates … I haven’t seen any pirates killing people in Canada lately.
People round the world are persecuted for their religious beliefs, their ethnicity or the colour of their skin. We live in a society that welcomes all who want to live here peacefully.
A couple of years ago, in the depths of the recession I wrote one of these blog entries suggesting that Things Could be MUCH Worse.
We are are right in the middle of Kindness Week Ottawa… that is the type of world in which we all live here in Canada. It doesn’t get much better than this!
Now … if only it was warmer!!!!
Walk fast and smile!!!
