We Can't Be Brilliant at Everything!

Every now and then I am reminded of one of my significant deficiencies … not that it is the only one, just the one I am willing to share here!

I have an awful sense of direction … if it is at all possible to get lost, I will!

This morning I had a couple of meetings out of the office and since I have been to both locations before, I didn’t give a second thought to how I might get there.

However (a) it has been a little while since I have been to these places; and (b) last time I went from the office to each, this time I was going to the first destination and then the second!  That was enough!  Needless to say I spent longer in the car than I needed to … and experienced that familiar exasperation with my inability to paint a map in my mind!

So what is the business lesson from this?

Both individuals AND companies will get their best return on investment by focusing on improving strengths … and not spend as much effort on the weaknesses.

Companies will often spend a ton of time and effort on “fixing” poor performers (often with low ROI), meanwhile leaving top performers to “do their thing”.  In reality, putting more effort into helping top performers to  be even more successful is a better use of resources.

So … I parked, got my iPhone out and found my way to the second appointment.  I don’t need to “fix” my sense of direction  I just need to be more accepting of the limitation … and make sure I have appropriate backup plans!
