One of the hardest things to do as a manager is to fire somebody. There are a lot of reasons why you may be in that situation, and you always look for reasons not to do it. That is natural, reasonable and the human way to look at these situations. However … sometimes it is so clear, and yet we still have trouble acting.
One of the very clear times that you need to fire someone is when you get someone with a bad attitude!
One Sunday I went to my favorite coffee shop to pick up a “large black” on my way in to the office. It was surprisingly busy for a Sunday morning and I had the pleasure of waiting in line for a little while observing the staff as they went about their business. They certainly did NOT subscribe to my walk fast and smile philosophy. Their supervisor is someone that I have quietly observed over several weeks and would describe as a sour faced, surly and extremely negative person.
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”
When I got to the cash I said to the young man who served me … “Hey smile, it can’t be all bad!” He looked at the line and said “Its really bad man!” The long line behind me prevented me from “getting into it” but as a business owner my sympathy went out to that franchise owner.
Some things to ponder …
1. If you have to do a job … why not do it right?
2. The job won’t feel any better if you “drag your ass” and complain!
3. Smile! It is infectious, and guess what … you WILL feel better!
4. People notice!
5. Most important … you are the architect of your own destiny. Sour faced, surly negative people do not go anywhere!
Back to the bad apples … that franchise owner needs to fire “Ms. Sour Face”. Bad apples should ALWAYS be fired fast! We have all had them and the worst ones are those that are sweetness and light in front of “the boss”, but poison behind their back. The boss ALWAYS knows, it might take a little time but you DO always know. When you know it … fire them fast, because they are hurting your business!
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”
