Ego … and humility!

Are you “too important” to <fill in the blank>?

Is it beneath you to take out the garbage, go on a coffee run or fix the broken chair in the office?

When you start thinking like that, you begin to create the “us and them” mentality.

Clearly, on an ongoing basis it is more efficient for people on a lower pay scale to handle the more mundane tasks … BUT when you start to feel those tasks are beneath you, you are feeding an ego.  THAT is a slippery slope for morale.

Leaders need to be sensitive to their teams, and when you distance yourself from your team you lose that connection … and risk losing your team.

Ego is easy to feed … a little success, a few pats on the back, a promotion or two, a few fat pay cheques and before you know it you are a “superstar” … too important to do the “little jobs”!

Keep your feet on the ground and remember life can change quickly … human nature loves to see the “mighty” fall!
