Gossip is a Destructive Behavior

Vince Lombardi quote about winning in a complex societyWhat is the value of loyalty? What is the value of a good team player? I think this is the point that Mastercard would say … priceless!

It is strange but true that many people love the opportunity to run down a colleague, an associate, a family member or even anybody that they can find as a target.

It is a very unattractive trait.  To whisper about someone’s failings or perceived failings; or to try to deflect one’s own failings by pointing the finger somewhere else.

If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.”   Aesop

If you get a reputation for gossiping and running down your colleagues then you will lose credibility fast, you will never be a true leader, you will not be someone that people want on their team.

The kind of people that I admire are supportive of their team, will find good things to say about people, will not repeat destructive comments … I would describe them as people with character.

A person with character will listen more than they talk, and if they hear gossip about others then they keep it to themselves. This is the kind of person who makes a good team player, the kind of person who people want to be around.

“Isn’t it kind of silly to think that tearing someone else down builds you up?”  Sean Covey

A person of character will build people up … not knock them down!

Make it a goal to be a person of character!

  1. This is a great post! These days it seems as if we as society are losing some of these morals and values. Thank you for encouraging professionalism and respect within the work place.

  3. It is truly unfortunate that some people never leave high school, even after they’ve received their diploma, degree, MBA, PhD, etc…

Ironically, most people who engage in such activities, only do so to feel better about themselves, when in reality they end up looking worse.

The only way to stop gossip is to not devote any energy to them. If somebody is gossiping to you or around you, ask them to stop. Being a passive listener encourages this behaviour and trying to confront the rumour can be like throwing fuel onto a fire!

Gossip can be especially vicious when it somehow goes from being a rumour to ‘fact’. Take caution in what you choose to believe.
