Leaders Do Impact Those Around Them … Good and Bad!

I still remember a conversation from many years ago, with a former boss of mine.  I had been in a “bad mood” that day, for some reason … and everyone knew it. 

My boss put me straight!

“Kevin … I don’t know what’s going on and if you want to talk about it we can, but here’s the thing.  Your bad mood is affecting the whole office and you need to get a grip!”

I was a little taken aback.  (a) I wasn’t aware that I was having such an affect; (b) 99% of the time I was a very positive impact in the office … so surely people could cut me some slack on the very occasional time that I was in a bad mood?

The fact is that as a leader the negative affects of my mood was not acceptable.  My job is to lead, to set the right example, to pump people up … not drag them down.  If everyone felt it was OK to openly be negative then someone might be down most of the time!

My poor mood did nothing to improve my acceptance of criticism … so I took a little time to think through what I had heard and realised he was right.  It was a good lesson about leadership … and as leaders we always need to be cognisant of how our actions and words might be seen by those around us.

My boss also demonstrated his strong leadership by tackling the issue when he did.  Many would have waited for me to be in a better mood before confronting the issue … but again he was right.  It is far better to have those tough conversations when they can have most impact (and minimise the disruption to those around me).

Life IS full of ups and downs, that is just a fact.  We ALL have THOSE DAYS … but is is how you deal with them that matters most.  Which is one reason I blogged about THOSE DAYS on a previous occasion.

 So … if you are feeling a little “down” be cognisant of how you act and minimise the impact on those around you.  If it is a rare occurrence then work hard to drag yourself out of that “funk” … focus on the good things in your life, hang out with the positive people, be nice to yourself and recognise this as something that will pass.  Don’t say or do things that you will regret later!

And remember!  SMILE … because it WILL be alright in the end!
