Whether you are new to the work force, or have been “around the block” a few times you will almost certainly face change in the workplace. The world is changing at such a pace that it is almost impossible to avoid.
First thing … change is good! Change is NOT something to resist, it is something to embrace, to evaluate and to provide feedback on!
Secondly … one of the things that keeps us interested, and interesting, is learning. When we stop learning we really start to die! Change is just one more way in which we can keep learning … I wrote a blog entry about life long learning that you might want to read.
Third … sometimes, particularly if we consider ourselves experienced, and sometimes just because we think we know better, there is a tendency to “blow off” change and stick to what we think is the right way. Not good! Experience is indeed a valuable asset, when used to support an organization … through positive contributions. When “experience” is used in a negative way it can be very destructive, hurting change initiatives and ultimately “blowing back” on the “negative influence”.
Habit number 5 is … First seek to understand, then to be understood.
If you try to resist change, are not willing to give the company way a try, then you will lose (maybe the guy in the cartoon will bring some change). If you truly give the company way a try and think you can improve upon it, then you are much more likely to be heard.
