Google Buys North
Google has officially completed the acquisition of North, a Canadian company renowned for its fashionable smart glasses. North, is a Waterloo-based company originally started as Thalmic Labs that created the Myo armband. Following its first venture, Thalmic Labs relaunched as North in October 2018, with the Focals smart glasses as its key product.

HPE Paying $925 Million for Silver Peak
Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s networking business is getting a serious shot in the arm with the purchase of software-defined WAN standout Silver Peak for approximately $925 million in cash. HPE will combine Silver Peak’s SD-WAN technology with Aruba, HPE’s networking subsidiary, who was recently named a visionary in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Data Center And Cloud Networking.
Acronis Buys DeviceLock
Acronis has acquired DeviceLock to enforce privacy at the device level and prevent threat actors from accessing data on an organization’s system. The Schaffhausen, Switzerland-based cyber protection vendor said its acquisition of San Ramon, Calif.-based DeviceLock will identify and block abnormal behaviors such as threat actors attempting to access sensitive documents or employees looking to steal data that isn’t relevant to their job responsibilities, according to Gaidar Magdanurov, Acronis’ chief cyber officer and chief operating officer.
Advent International Buys Forescout
Advent International, a Boston-based private equity firm, will buy San Jose, Calif.-based cybersecurity vendor Forescout for $29 per share, down from the purchase price of $33 per share, or $1.9 billion, agreed to five months earlier. The deal comes just five days before the scheduled start of a Delaware Court of Chancery trial between Forescout and Advent over Advent’s attempt to walk away from the deal.
DXC selling Healthcare business for $525 million to Dedalus Group
DXC Technology is selling its healthcare providers software business to an Italian healthcare technology company in a cash deal worth $525 million. The deal will make Tysons, Va.-based DXC healthcare provider software business a part of Florence, Italy-based Dedalus Group, which claims to be Europe’s leading healthcare and diagnostic software provider and one of the largest in the world.
Fortinet Buys Opaq Networks
Fortinet has purchased Opaq Networks to strengthen distributed network protection everywhere from data centers and branch offices to remote users and Internet of Things devices. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based platform security giant said its acquisition of Herndon, Va.-based cloud security startup Opaq will allow Fortinet to deliver the most complete Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) platform on the market.
Mimecast Buys MessageControl
Mimecast has bought email security startup MessageControl to help stop social engineering and human identity attacks through the use of machine-learning technology. The Lexington, Mass.-based email security vendor said its purchase of Chicago-based MessageControl will provide customers using productivity apps such as Microsoft 365 with stronger protection against advanced phishing and impersonation attacks. The acquisition will also prevent the inadvertent loss of sensitive and confidential data while serving as an additional sensor for Mimecast’s threat intelligence.
Cisco Buys Modcam
Cisco Systems is about to inject more intelligence into its Meraki smart camera portfolio. The tech giant on Friday announced that it has acquired Swedish video analytics provider Modcam for an undisclosed sum. The deal, which already closed, will make Cisco’s MV smart security camera line "even smarter," said Chris Stori, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s Meraki business.
Uber Buys RouteMatch
Uber is reaching deeper into the public transport realm with the acquisition of Routematch, an Atlanta, Georgia-based company that provides technology services to transit agencies. By bringing Routematch into the fold, Uber is advancing its long-stated mission of making "individual car ownership a thing of the past" and helping cities provide "more accessible public transportation." This deal follows a string of recent acquisitions as Uber continues to expand far beyond its core ride-hailing service. The company is currently wrapping up a Cornershop acquisition to boost its grocery delivery ambitions, while its impending $2.7 billion Postmates deal fits neatly into Uber’s "delivery anything" trajectory.
