Sometimes it seems like doom and gloom can be all around us … and it is easy to let it drag us down. I think that everybody I talk to lately is saying things like … I have given up looking at the stock market” or “I guess retirement is never going to happen”. Certainly the way the markets have gone in the past week, it has been hard on anyone who has seen their retirement savings, or any savings plummet.
The reality is that there is little we can do about our portfolios at this time … so worrying isn’t going to help.
The only thing we can do is to focus on the positives in our life, and maybe take stock of all the blessings we have. If we think positive thoughts and keep a positive frame of mind it will reduce our stress and we will be more effective in everything that we do.
The FIRST thing we need to do is SMILE … you can click through to my thoughts on that subject.
NEXT … make a list of everything in your life that you should be grateful for … your health, your spouse, your kids, your friends, your job (plenty of people without one), the fact that you were born in a great country, your parents, your upbringing, your boss, your co-workers, Tim Horton’s coffee … anything that you enjoy on a day to day basis, big and small. Keep it around so that you can review it regularly!
Buy a motivational book to keep on your desk or by the bedside table etc. Life’s Little Instruction Book is a good example. Some people think they are hokey … but anything that brings a smile to your face has to be good!
Do things that make you feel good, and really be in the moment as you enjoy them. Music can be a very positive motivator and I blogged about listening to Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong which has both positive sentiments and brings back good memories.
As I said earlier there are always events and situations that can drag us down, but letting them drag us down serves no useful purpose and turns us into miserable people.
