Currently I am on vacation and relaxing at home, with my Mom and sister visiting from England. I am not particularly good at relaxing although I do recognise the need to get away from the office and have a change of scenery. If I am to remain sharp at work I need to find ways to have my brain do other stuff or I get stale.
In recent years I have begun creating lists of things I would like to do and places I would like to visit. While I recognise it is again applying time management techniques to my vacation time, I also feel like I can maximise my time off and do more with my life. So maybe it is not everyone’s idea of relaxing, but it works for me.
There are probably many theories about what life is about, but at one end of the spectrum are those people who want to do as much as possible in this short time we have here … and at the other end are those people who want as little stress as possible, and just want to “get by”. Of course it is never black and white and most people will fall somewhere along that continuum, and I fall nearer the end that wants to do a lot with my life!
So, for me vacation is not about loafing around doing nothing although I do enjoy spending time reading novels, which is as close as I come. Typically I want to do something, visit places, workout, be on the move … and I’m sure that would drive many people crazy!
In the same way that work goals and personal achievement goals help me to get where I want to be in my career, listing places I would like to see, and things I would like to do, help me to achieve more in my personal life. I don’t want to be near death and wishing I had done those things, when with a little planning I could.
