Setting goals is however just the first step. If I set a goal to lose 10 lbs. … it is probably a good goal, but I need to have some parameters to work within.
1. There needs to be a time frame … if I don’t have a time by which I reach the goal then it is not very useful. So losing 10 lbs in the next 3 months would make more sense.
2. There needs to be a plan … because just having a goal, even with a time frame, does not ensure success. So with this particular goal I would need an action plan that might include some dietary changes, and some exercise changes. Perhaps my action plan might look something like:
i. Reduce my portion sizes by 20% for all meals.
ii. Exercise 3 times a week on a cardio machine for 30 minutes at a time, at a medium intensity.
iii. Walk 10,000 steps a day.
iv. Add weight training 2 times a week.
v. Cut out alcohol, except for one special meal a week.
vi. Review weight every week and adjust plan accordingly if not on target to reach goal in 3 months.
It doesn’t matter what you goal is, it needs a time frame, it needs an action plan and it needs a review process that allows the action plan to be modified.
Your goals might be relatively simple, such as losing weight (note … I do NOT say easy). The goals might be more complex, such as starting a business. They can be very personal related to your health or relationships in your life, or they can be career based.
Goals are the starting point … and without them you really don’t know where you are going. Use them wisely, with an action plan, and you can make dramatic changes in your life … and using them to push your limits is sure to bring you personal satisfaction.
