While I was born in Liverpool, England (which some say is the capital of Ireland) I also have a fair bit of Irish in me. My mother was born in County Kerry and my father’s family came from Tipperary.
With my Irish heritage I inherited a love of Irish toasts, sayings and the outlook on life that these portray. Given our current circumstances, a little levity seemed in order, so I thought I would share a few, to brighten up your day!
May misfortune follow you the rest of your life, and never catch up.
May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.
May you be in heaven a full half hour before the devil knows your dead.
May you get all your wishes but one so that you will always have something to strive for!
A personal favorite … oops!
May you die in bed at 95, shot by a jealous spouse.
And one I have heard many times from relatives …
May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
When I first saw this one it definitely brought a smile … the imagery is perfect!
As you slide down the banisters of life may the splinters never point the wrong way.
I think it is the irreverence that I like the most, but also the joy of life that comes through loud and clear! I can relate to all of these … and there a tons more!
Hope these gave you a chuckle in the midst of a pandemic!
